Dr. Jan Powell (Artistic Director) hails from Oregon, where she was founder and Artistic Director of the innovative Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, and where she received her PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Oregon. Her professional resume includes serving as the Artistic Director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and past president of the international Shakespeare Theatre Association, in addition to her extensive experience in education, training and professional development, theater consulting, community engagement, and leadership in the professional theater community.  Powell’s artistic credits are also extensive; she has produced and directed most of the Shakespearean canon, including all of the histories. For Richmond Shakespeare and Henley Street, her highly acclaimed recent work includes; The Taming of the Shrew, The Importance of Being Earnest, King John (RTCC Nomination-Best Director,) an original theatrical adaptation of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Othello, and Macbeth, for which she won Best Direction from the Richmond Theatre Critics’ Circle. Other notable direction includes Marat/Sade at Theatre 54 in New York City, The Taming of the Shrew for Kingsmen Shakespeare in Los Angeles, Red Light Winter at Brooklyn Bay in Portland, and the world premiere of the award-winning Money Shot for Stark Raving Theatre.



Jacqueline O’Connor (Managing Director) is a founding member of Henley Street Theatre, and the managing director of Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare. Originally from New York, she moved to Richmond to tour with Theatre IV, and has worked there as an actress, business administrator, director, stage manager and acting teacher for over 25 years. She was the business manager for Barksdale Theatre, helping to oversee Barksdale’s move from Hanover Tavern to The Shops at Willow Lawn. She was a freelance acting teacher for over a decade at The School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC), teaching students of every age. She has served on the board of Swift Creek Mill Playhouse and worked with the Richmond arts organization, OPUS. She is currently the Vice Chair of the Resident Company Association, which helps to serve the needs of the performing arts companies resident at Richmond CenterStage. Jacqueline is also the treasurer for the Richmond Association of Professional Theatres, and serves on a grant review panel for the Virginia Commission for the Arts. She has been awarded the Richmond Times Dispatch Phoebe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and received a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Jacqueline holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Shenandoah Conservatory.
