Jan

Dr. Jan Powell (Artistic Director)  hails from Oregon, where she was founder and Artistic Director of the innovative Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, and received her PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Oregon. She has served as the Artistic Director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and past president of the international Shakespeare Theatre Association. Jan’s artistic credits are extensive; she has produced and directed most of the Shakespearean canon, including all of the histories. For Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare, her highly acclaimed recent work includes Equivocation (co-production with Virginia Repertory Theatre), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, The Importance of Being Earnest (co-production with Richmond Triangle Players)King John (Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award nomination for Best Director,) an original theatrical adaptation of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Othello, and Macbeth, for which she won Best Direction from the Richmond Theatre Critics’ Circle. Other notable direction includes Marat/Sade at Theatre 54 and A Comedy of Errors at Looking Glass Theatre in New York City, The Taming of the Shrew for Kingsmen Shakespeare in Los Angeles, and direction for regional theatres across the country including the American Shakespeare Center, the Mendocino Shakespeare Festival, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, California Shakespeare Festival, Stoneham Theatre in Boston, and Nevada Repertory Theatre. She also has many years of consulting experience in public speaking training and professional development, theater development, and coaching for actors and singers.  

 

 

 

Jacqueline O’Connor (Managing Director) is a founding member of Henley Street Theatre, and the managing director of Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare. Originally from New York, Jacquie moved to Richmond to tour with Theatre IV, and has worked there as an actress, business administrator, director, stage manager and acting teacher for over 25 years. She served as the business manager for Barksdale Theatre, helping to oversee Barksdale’s move from historical Hanover Tavern to The Shops at Willow Lawn. She was a freelance acting teacher for over a decade at The School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC), teaching students of every age. She has served on the board of Swift Creek Mill Playhouse and worked with the Richmond arts organization, OPUS. She is a member of the Richmond Virginia Theatre Alliance (RVATA), which helps to serve the needs of the resident arts companies that perform at Richmond CenterStage. Jacquie is also the treasurer for the Richmond Association of Professional Theatres, and serves on a grant review panel for the Virginia Commission for the Arts. She recently won the 2014 Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her work in Good People.  She was also awarded the Richmond Times Dispatch Phoebe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Jekyll and Hyde, and received a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Musical, the Musical of Musicals. Jacquie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Shenandoah Conservatory.
