“What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?”
A plane crashes on a deserted island—the only survivors, a group of schoolboys. Marooned and left to their own devices without adults or rules, their fragile sense of order begins to collapse. Read and analyzed by middle and high school students for decades, the book’s symbolism reveals much about human nature and raises the question, “How thin is the veneer of ‘civilization’?

Like many excellent works, William Golding’s novel, The Lord of the Flies can be read on many different levels. It is possible to read the book literally, as a mere story about boys marooned on an island. William Golding calls the book an indictment of the nature of man. Critics have claimed that the novel is full of symbolism and allusions to the bible and other religious figures. Join us as we take a look into the true meaning of this award winning book.
